BOARD OF DISCIPLES

Proposal to Administrative Board
From the Lay Leadership Committee

The Lay Leadership Committee proposes that a new Board be established for our church.  It will be called the Board of Disciples. This Board shall have three purposes:

bulletProvide a vision for the ministries of the church.
bulletCoordinate the ministries of the church.
bulletBe a training ground for present and future spiritual leaders of the church.
  • Any member of the church may be on this Board without being nominated by the Lay Leadership Committee. People desiring to be a part of this Board will exemplify the following:
bulletShow a desire to serve the Kingdom of God and this church.
bulletShow a commitment to the Kingdom of God in general.
bulletShow a commitment to this church by regular worship attendance.
bulletShow a commitment to this church by being active in an ongoing Bible study.
bulletShow a commitment to this church by actively serving on one of the church ministries.

  • Anyone serving on this Board will adopt the following spiritual goals:
bulletDevelop an understanding of how the Old and New Testaments are compatible.
bulletDevelop an understanding of the values and history of this local church.
bulletDevelop an understanding of the relationship between church, pastor and laity.
bulletBe able to lead others to Christ.
bulletBe empowered to speak the Word of God with authority.

  • The following current training events have been identified as helping Christians to move towards these goals.  Every member will be expected to take at least two of the following training courses each year for the first three years while they serve on the Board. Those who have already taken any of these training courses will be recognized as already having fulfilled this expectation.

bulletIntro to the Church – A 6 week study during the Sunday school hour that teaches the values and history of our church.
bulletDisciple Bible Study 1 – A 34 week study that helps people develop an overview of the Old and New Testaments. (This course counts as two for the purpose yearly training.)
bullet Contagious Christian – A 6 week study of how to lead others to Christ through established relationships they might have with others.
bulletLay Assembly – A Friday evening through Saturday afternoon event that helps laity understand how to work with the local pastor to achieve maximum ministry to the world.
bulletLay Speaking – A one day event that trains Christians to find, understand and communicate the Word of God as found in the scriptures.
bulletEmmaus – A Thursday through Sunday retreat that develops understanding of God, strengthens a personal relationship with God and inspires people to serve the Kingdom of God.
bulletAlpha – A 10 week study that looks at the basic questions of who is Jesus, the Holy Spirit and what God really expects of Christians.

  • Faith Quest – A 17 week study of the Church and how it is supposed to serve the needs of the world.

Other training courses will be added to this list of possibilities as they are presented to the Lay Leadership Committee.
